Council response

Thank you for submitting your online Petition ‘M25’, related to the implementation of measures to minimise noise levels in the Reigate / Leatherhead area.

The ePetition ran from 22/10/2020 to 08/12/2020 and has now finished. As the number of signatories was less than 20, in accordance with the Council’s Petition Scheme, I am writing to provide a response to your petition.

Highways England (HE) is the government agency with responsibility for the strategic road network, including the M25. Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s powers to combat noise pollution from the M25 are therefore limited to engaging with Highways England.

In January of this year, in response to a previous petition, the Council Leader wrote to Highways England drawing their attention to the impact of M25 noise on residents, specifically between Junctions 8 and 9. You can view further details of this petition, along with a full report, on our website at https://reigate-bansteadintranet.moderngov.co.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=39&RPID=1561352&HPID=1561352

In response to his letter, the Council Leader received a reply from Highways England. This outlined the actions HE is taking to reduce noise pollution, including the repair of joints in the concrete road surface, investigation into the future management of concrete road surfaces and repairs to some sections of noise barriers.

Recognising that this information was provided by Highways England in January, I will make contact with them again to raise their awareness of your petition and the suggestions within it. Should any additional information be forthcoming from HE, I will let you know.
