30 EXEMPT BUSINESS
RESOLVED that members of the Press and public be excluded from the meeting for the following item of business under Section 100A(4) of the Local Government Act 1972 on the grounds that:

(i) it involved the likely disclosure of exempt information as defined in paragraph 1 of Part 1 of Schedule 12A of the Act; and

(ii) the public interest in maintaining the exemption outweighed the public interest in disclosing the information.

31 APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT MEMBERS TO SERVE ON THE STANDARDS COMMITTEE
RECOMMENDED that the following persons be appointed to serve on the Council's Standards Committee as Independent Members with immediate effect:

Mr. P.J. Allen - Applicant 8
Dr. C.L. Vaughan - Applicant 9
Major General Michael Steele - Applicant 4

RESOLVED that applicants 6 and 2 be informed that on this occasion they have not been selected for appointment as Independent Members and they be thanked for their interest in serving on the Standards Committee.

(NOTES:

(i) The Committee had before it relevant applications and related papers.
(ii) The meeting adjourned between 12 midday and 1.20 p.m.
(iii) Councillor Mrs. Dixon asked that her name be recorded as having voted against the appointment of Applicant 4. Councillor S.N. Farrer and Mrs. J.A. Cook abstained from voting on this appointment in view of their personal interest - see Minute 27).

31Further to the last meeting (Minute 25), the Committee interviewed five shortlisted candidates (Applicants, 6, 8, 9, 4 and 2) who had applied to serve as Independent Members on the Standards Committee. One shortlisted candidate (Applicant 1) had been invited for interview but was unable to attend.
